A Good Title

About

I hit a midlife crisis. I went to therapy, quit my job, and got obsessed with the title industry.

For someone with a finance and tech background, that sounds random. Let me explain.

I’ve always been drawn to complex systems that just work. Property ownership is foundational to American society. Growing up overseas, I was shocked to learn that the US has no central registry as the source of truth for who owns what. And yet, every single day, tens of thousands of properties change hands. Those transactions hold because the title industry searches, examines, clears, and underwrites every one. Mind blown!

This is the beauty of federalism and capitalism. The system figures out a way!

So I built a title agency and started studying the business landscape of the title industry. I sat in land title conferences and got to know the people who quietly guard the integrity of property ownership.

Now I’m writing it all down.

A Good Title is where I document what I see and think out loud about it.
